Who Is Dr. J. Bruce Francis
He describes himself as a philosopher of higher education, and he is in his 87th year. Across a 65-year career he has mentored more than 475 doctoral students, which is a working lifetime spent on the single question the trilogy now puts in writing.
He dates the idea to a seminar at the University of Michigan in 1969, where he first grasped that people reason well only under particular conditions, and that higher education exists to create them. Book One is the long account of how humanity built those conditions.
Why This Conversation, and Why Now
Then the conditions changed. Something arrived that could reason rather than merely retrieve, and the question of how human beings are taught to think stopped being a question about universities alone.
Dr. Francis sets out three stances people take towards it. Containment, keep it boxed and regulated. Control, treat it as a tool to be wielded and never a mind to be met. And a third that he argues almost nobody is naming, which he calls Cogenesis: reasoning with it, both sides contributing, both challenging, arriving somewhere neither reaches alone.
He does not use the term artificial intelligence in these books. He writes digital intelligence, and says the distinction is part of the argument, because nothing about the reasoning he documents is artificial.
